This case is similar to the one described above. Performing a sinus lift in this minimally invasive way is known as the crestal approach. In most cases minimal-incision surgery via the crestal approach is possible, but where a great deal of bone has been lost the gum may have to be opened more widely — the lateral approach. With the lateral approach, more bone grafting is generally needed and the incision is larger, so swelling and discomfort afterwards last comparatively longer. (See the images below.)
